Project Summary

Arctic Assault was a project for Intermediate Game Development during my sophomore year. Our task was to create a fully functional game within a timeframe of 12 weeks. With a team of four developers, we created a First-Person shooter survival game, akin to that of Call of Duty Zombies. The player starts with a pistol and melee ability as waves of zombies spawn and chase them down around this arctic research base.

Responsibilities

Level Design

I was in charge of spearheading the major design aspects of this project, as well as divvying out tasks to the rest of the team. By working between our 3D modeler and requesting specific assets and our programmer to build out the core functions of the game, we were able to produce a cohesive project with a consistent style. The bulk of my effort was spent working out the various areas of the game, segmented off by buyable doors. This is including but not limited to: the entranceway, lower office, cafeteria, concourse, server room, and upper observatory.

During the early stages of planning, Arctic Assault was meant to be a tower-defense game. As a result, there was a level created with this gameplay in mind, but ultimately set aside. Not wanting to waste the effort put into this level, I came up with a way to reuse and repurpose this level as a finale escape level once the player completes the core objective of the game. This level was designed to be hectic and excite the player as a countdown timer forces them to run for their lives to the exit as triumphant music blares in their ears. I considered this to be a very successful example of agile development and resource management.
